Carol M. White Physical Education Program Grant
Empowering Students and Community in Fighting Obesity
Grant Goals

Goal 1

Design and Implement a comprehensive Health and Physical Education program K-12, aligned with Washington State's EALR (Essential Academic Learning Requirements) Standards with the emphasis on physically active students who choose to eat healthy, nutritious diets.

Objective 1.1: To align physical education offerings in the District with Washington State.

Objective 1.2: Provide/improve opportunities for activity outside the physical education classroom within the school day.

Objective 1.3: Provide curriculum choices that will transition to life-long physical activity.

Objective 1.4: Provide research-based, embedded professional development

  1. Provide teachers with the skills and knowledge to implement a standards-based program.
  2. Provide opportunities for teachers to stay abreast of the latest research, issues and trends in the field of physical education.

Goal 2

Assess and improve the school nutrition environment within the schools and provide nutrition education curriculam to students and parents in the Ellensburg community for development of healthy eating practices.

Objective 2.1: Create a more conducive environment to eating school breakfast and lunch.

Objective 2.2: Provide for healthy food choices for the school breakfast and lunch programs.

Objective 2.3: Develop a student leadership advisory group to work with the food service director.

Goal 3

Collaborate with parent/community organizations to provide more venues for physical activities, expand fitness opportunities, and community education regarding healthy eating choices for students and families outside of the school day.

Objective 3.1: Provide opportunities for the parents/community to use school facilities.

Objective 3.2: Develop a media campaign to provide outreach to the parents and community regarding the eating of healthy, nutritious foods.

Other Goals Stated in the Narrative

  1. Educate the public on the importance of physical activity and good eating habits.
  2. Fitness education and assessment to help students understand, improve or maintain their physical well-being.
  3. Instruction of a variety of motor skills and physical activities designed to enhance and increase the physical, mental, or social and emotional development of every student.
  4. Development of and instruction in, cognitive concepts about motor skill and physical fitness that support a lifelong healthy lifestyle.
  5. Opportunities to develop social and cooperative skills through physical activity participation.
  6. Instruction in healthy eating habits and good nutrition so better choices are made.
  7. Opportunities for professional development for teachers of physical education to stay abreast of the latest research, issues, and trends in the field of physical education.
  8. Increase opportunities for community involvement in activities.
  9. Enabling participants to realize that achieving more activity and reducing their risk of obesity is a success they can be proud of and a lifelong change for sustainability.
